しつける【躾ける】

〔行儀などを教える〕 bring up; teach manners; 〔訓練する〕 train; drill; discipline; school.

●子供をしつける discipline [train, bring up] a child; teach a child manners

・犬をしつける train a dog 《to obey one's commands》

・よくしつけられている犬 a well-trained[-behaved] dog; an obedient dog

・厳しくしつける discipline strictly; train harshly

・食事の作法をしつける teach sb table manners.

●家庭でしつけるべきことまで学校に頼る親がいる. Some parents rely on the school to teach their children things they should be taught at home.

・物を頂いたときはきちんと「ありがとう」と言うようにしつけられた. I was brought up to say a proper “thank you” whenever I was given something.

・最近の子供はきちんとした挨拶の仕方もしつけられていないのか. Aren't children even taught how to greet people properly these days?
